Battening Down the Hatches
Battening Down the HatchesBattening Down the HatchesThe presence of so many mid- and senior-level executives among those laid off has created a kind of unemployment denial wave.Neither the economy nor the job market will turn around in January, according to recruiters, outplacement counselors and career coaches. In fact, the environment might get worse before it gets better. The U.S. lost more than 2 million jobs during 2008, more than 500,000 in November alone, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report available at the end of 2008. The U.S. lost another 100,000 during the first weeks of December, according to analyst reports that predicted as many as 600,000 total job-losses through December.Outplacement firms are swamped, according to Sally Havers, senior vice president for business development at The Ayers Group/Career Partners International. We are anticipating some reductions in force in the first quarter of 2009, said Ayers, whose group is bracing for an infl ux of the shocked and displaced who will be working for Ayers clients until layoffs scheduled for January and February. There will be a lot of talented people looking around for whats next. Not all the news is bad, however, according to Bob Cozzens, president of the National Banking Financial Services Network a network that connects individual and boutique recruiters nationwide in the same way the Multiple Listing Service connects real-estate agents. There are pockets of activity that are strong some of our members have had excellent years, even banking recruiters have had excellent years, said Cozzens, whose group represents more than 100 companies and about 300 recruiters who mostly focus on local markets. Even when you see that XYZ bank is laying off thousands of people, our experience is that there are still hiring needs to be filled.Smaller companies may also hire a potential job seeker on a contract basis, tiding him over a rough financial patch, and turn the arrangement into a full-time job when the economy improves enough to justify it, she said.Job seekers have to be a little creative in a market like this, Havers said. Not only do companies need to replace the normal number of those who retire or leave for other reasons, they have to hire people to clean up the mess the rest of the economy made. Financial executives with skills and experience at workouts negotiations between homeowners and mortgage holders to ease payment plans and avoid foreclosures are at a premium right now.Not that theyd be talking too much about that. From a PR point of view, its suicide for companies to lay off a gazillion people, then advertise theyre hiring other people, Cozzens said. The impact of the recession is so broad that, incongruously, its not generating the kind of bitterness of previous recessions, which tended to hit one part of the economy or one class of workers much harder than others, according to Diane Grimard Wilson, a career coach whos president of Grimard Wilson Consulting Inc. and author of Back in Control How to Stay Sane, Productive, and Inspired in Your Career Transition. But the presence of so many mid- and senior-level executives among those laid off has created a kind of unemployment denial wave that will break during the first part of 2009, she said.A lot of the people who have been laid off this time around are not the type of people who get laid off regularly, she said. Many of them may have unrealistic expectations of how long it takes to get a job, even without a recession, or no expectations at all. So we may get into a period after the New Year where that reality sinks in and they may be in for a dark time emotionally. That, and the inevitable new layoffs in January and February, may be offset by a wave of hiring by managers or companies who know they need the extra bodies but have just not pulled the trigger, Cozzens said. People are just flat afraid. For the positions that are open, employers are dragging their feet.Wa iting for good newsIt will take only a little positive pressure to push those companies into making the hiring decisions they know they have to make, Cozzens said.A new presidential administration, a little good economic news or just a sustained lack of bad news might be enough.People want to believe that Obamas plans are going to help, Cozzens said. Any change might do it. Look at all the money people have pulled out of the market and is just sitting on the sidelines. With a little bit of good news, that money could come back and the market could really pick up and give the market back some confidence. That will filter back to corporate America and cause more of those foot-draggers to make some decisions. It wouldnt take much.

The Latest on Resume Fonts
The Latest on Resume FontsThe Latest on Resume FontsWhen it comes to designing your resume, the advice most professional resume writers will give is to keep it simple. Dont make it too complicated and dont use weird fonts. But on the flip side, theres much less said on what fonts should be used. To settle this age-old problem once and for all (for now), Bloomberg gave the font situation a long hard look. What this report says is that Helvetica was the safest choice. Helvetica and its sans-serif relatives drip with professionalism and theyre easy to read both great qualities when it comes to font. Resume Fonts That Dont WorkNow that we know whats awesome, lets look at what doesnt work. There are several types of fonts that leave a bad taste in the mouths of many recruiters and HR professionals, but the sins they commit are varied. To help you avoid the bad eggs, take a hard look at the losersunterstellung are just a few of the fonts you should be wary ofTimes New Roman. This has been an old and trusted friend in the font world. And although thats great, it also means that its getting pretty worn out because its seen all the time. Choosing Times New Roman tells your future employers that you didnt bother to change the default in Word.Connected Script Fonts. You didnt handwrite your resume, so why do you want someone to think you did? Connected script fonts look like handwriting (not mine, but someones handwriting) and theyre just as difficult to read. Never, ever use these when writing a professional resume.Courier. Like Times New Roman, Courier is a relic of days long past. Its the font typewriters used. Youre not using a typewriter, so why are you using Courier? Courier sends the same I cant be bothered message to future employers, along with a potentially ruffling look how cool I am for using an antique font.Comic Sans. Are you really using this font on your resume? Doesnt matter stop doing it right this instant Although Comic Sans is a fun font, your resume isnt a game and thats the message you send by using it. Your resume is a professional document, so always keep that forefront in mind it should look as suit and tie as it is.When it comes to your resume, the font you choose is as important as the outfit you wear to the interview you hope that document will land. Its vital to put your best foot, and font, forward to any HR person who might be reviewing that resume keep it easy to read with a tidy and universally-respected font like Helvetica.

Lab-on-a-Chip Could Replace the Diagnostic Lab
Lab-on-a-Chip Could Replace the Diagnostic Lab Lab-on-a-Chip Could Replace the Diagnostic Lab Lab-on-a-Chip Could Replace the Diagnostic LabIn another example of how engineering is playing an important role in improving the way medical care may be delivered all around the world, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technologys Kate Gleason College of Engineering is taking a different approach to emerging lab-on-a-chip technology.Michael Schertzer is leading a team developing digital microfluidic devices that can be used to assess biological fluids by introducing electricity. The devices are, in effect, small, portable laboratories for diagnosing diseases, and the hope is that the credit card-size devices will eventually replace all of the equipment of a traditional laboratory. The potential benefits are faster results and lower cost, making them especially valuable in remote or impoverished areas where no traditional laboratories are located. When most p eople think of microfluidic devices, they think of a pipe and making it small, Schertzer explains. You have a channel and you push fluid through it. Whats different about what we do is that we dont have a channel. We have two plates, a top and bottom, and a checkerboard of electrodes. By applying electric fields, we can make small droplets of fluid and move them around the checkerboard of electrodes. In addition to the general benefits of lab-on-a-chip, this approach allows the device to be mora flexible in several ways including in the number and types of reagents it can handle. If were doing a biological test that has many different biological fluids in it or different reagents, we can do that without increasing the complexity of the device, he says.Digital microfluidic devices can create, move, merge, and mix discrete droplets of fluid through the application of asymmetric electric fields. Image RITIf you are doing the test with a channel microfluidic device, it can be difficult t o do protocols that have lots of different reagents because of the complexity of the fabrication, Schertzer says. The digital device also allows testing in different ways. For example, in a hospital, testing could be done on multiple patients for one particular biomarker, for instance, for brain cancer. With the same device it could be testing someone at home for diabetes. Another use for the same device is to look for many different biomarkers at the same time in a single patient.A lot of microfluidic devices with a channel are attached to things like mechanical pumps or valves. Our devices, because they are all electronic have no mechanical parts, give another advantage, Schertzer says. All is needed is a power source and switching mechanism. Applying voltage to the checkerboard requires some sort of computer brain to serve as a controller, which could be something small such as Bluetooth on a cell phone.Schertzer said there are leise some engineering challenges, mainly related to being able to autonomously control the droplets moving around in space. In other ways, these devices are easier because they dont have channel pumps and valves that have to be dealt with, he said. The team is also interested in integrating digital microfluidics with other forms of microfluidics to capitalize on the benefits of both. With digital, there are advantages in multiplexing, but other researchers at RIT are working on other forms that offer other advantages. The team is looking at whether there is an interface that can be incorporated to go from a channel-based device to the digital device, and can they integrate something to allow cell sorting or particle separation in the digital platform. Those are the kinds of questions we are trying to answer now, Schertzer says. While he envisions the device first being available to medical centers, ultimately hes thinking that perhaps it could be something non-medically trained people could use at home, testing for any concerns - for e xample, prostate cancer. It would be amazing if you do these tests at home and then beam something out to your Apple watch to tell you that your levels for this eiweistoff are high. And then the watch would respond with here are some interventions for that.Schertzers general timetable is that it will take one to three years to iron out the technical problems so that prototypes for devices for biological testing or gene therapy could be ready in three to five years. He became interested in the health care field while attending a conference on microfluidics in Turkey as he was working on his Ph.D. At the time, he was more interested in heat transfer, but when he heard speakers talk about the use of microfluidics in fighting conditions like cancer and diabetes, the opportunity to help people appealed to him.Now he delights in seeing that same kind of spark ignited with students in his lab, who may have decided on engineering because they were good in math and physics and hadnt really th ought about the final impact engineers can have in so many areas. Engineers sell themselves short about that and also about the creativity you need to be designing things like this, he says.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionIt would be amazing if you could do diagnostic testing at home and then beam something out to your Apple watch to tell you that your levels for this protein are high.Prof. Michael Schertzer, RITs Kate Gleason College of Engineering

JOOR Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
JOOR Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion Below is a post originally written by PowerToFly Partner JOOR, and published on April 17, 2018. Go to JOORs page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more.At JOOR, we believe in a more diverse and inclusive tech industry and tech investor community. Our CEO, Kristin Savilia, is a proud member of All Raises Founders for Change, a group of venture-backed tech leaders who are dedicated to improving diversity and inclusion within their companies and at the highest levels of VC firms. Check out this Forbes cover article for more information. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 1000000 construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel neuheit/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,3 55, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentierung technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction indus try.

7 superfoods that can improve your concentration
7 superfoods that can improve yur concentration7 superfoods that can improve your concentrationThere are days when we expertly - and effortlessly - rattle through our to-do list and head out the door early, soaring with energy. And other days? Well, lets just say Facebook gets far more attention than our email, and excuses to go off task are plenty. Though there is no sure-fire, no-fail way to improve our concentration, what we put in our bodies can have an impact. Theres a reason why the saying we are we eat continues to be shared, after all.One way to motivate yourself to focus is by filling your diet with superfoods. As a certified holistic health coach and co-founder of Raw Generation, Jessica Rosen explains, this family of veggies, fruits, spices and more are naturally-occurring foods that possess powerful health-boosting properties. They can have a powerful impact your well-being when consumed habitually and can also enhance longevity and youthfulness. These are foods that ar e particularly rich in nutrients beyond ordinary foods. Because they are such a potent source of nutrients, they help amp up your metabolism, she explains. While the scientifically-proven impact of superfoods is still being studied - and you should always speak with a trusted expert before radically changing your diet - it is worth a bite to this brain grub into your diet. Here, experts share their best recommendationsMatcha Green TeaIt will be taxing to break up with your coffee, but consider having an affair with matcha green tea. Rosen explains this variety is packed with 137-times the antioxidants of regular green tea and provides an abundance of antioxidants, most notlageably EGCG. This nutrient helps us to burn calories, amp our metabolism and defends our body against free radicals that age us.And unlike coffee - which can make us shaky if we drink too much of it - Rosen says matcha green tea provides a more relaxed, focused energy. Matcha increases the amount of happy neur otransmitters in your brain. Thus, drinking matcha helps you to feel chilled out, yet alert. Its no wonder it has a traditional history of use by Zen Buddhist monks and Samurai warriors, she adds.PineappleGreat on their own, added to rice or on top of pizza for those with a quirky palette, holistic health counselor Holly Harding, INHC, AADP says everyones favorite yellow fruit is a smart choice if you wake up and just-cant. How come? Pineapple is rich in manganese, an antioxidant-rich trace mineral that creates strong bones, increases collagen production, and has a load of vitamin C and B1 vitamins that produce healthy cell function and metabolism. But for your noggin? The most important health benefit of pineapple is its digestive enzyme known as bromelain.?This enzyme breaks down protein molecules and has been determined to aid digestion and decrease inflammation, she explains. When this happens, your body is functioning more effectively, making it less likely that youll be distra cted by a 10-minute bathroom break to scroll through Instagram.AvocadosYou dont need to rationalize eating more avocados, but now you have a reason health researcher Mara Woloshin gives these green beauties lots of brain-boosting kudos. This potassium-rich food might be heavy on the budget, but they help to feed oxygen to our brains, improving our ability to process thoughts. Its not just the potassium in avocados, the fruit also increases blood flow, feeding more oxygen to your entire brain but perhaps most importantly, the prefrontal cortex - near your forehead, the area of the brain responsible for planning and critical thinking, she explains. Paired with some baby carrots, call this a just-about-perfect afternoon desk snack.Hemp SeedsWhen youre feeling out of the zone, its likely because your brain is missing out on something it needs. One way to improve your cognitive function is to add a handful (or three) of hemp seeds to your diet, Rosen says. These are rich in omega-3 fatt y acids and per gram, they pack more protein and iron than beef. As a flexible topping, you can add these to oatmeal, rice, vegetables, hummus and a plethora of other meals and snacks. Theyre one of the most nutritionally complete foods in the world, giving you a healthy dose of essential amino acids your body needs to function optimally, Rosen says.Sweet potatoIts easy to love sweet potatoes - on their own, paired with veggies and a purple drank protein, in chip form or when paired with another superfood, avocado. This makes downing them easier - and recommended by Woloshin. As a natural anti-inflammatory, this potato helps your memory. Sweet potatoes are chocked full of B vitamins and folate, all of which are cognitive boosters, especially as we age, she explains. As a bonus, sweet potatoes also slow down the conversion of foods to glucose - a.k.a., sugar - and thanks to its high quantity of fiber, they also help to preserve your memory and reduce the risk of some cancers and h eart disease.Red AlgaeNo, you dont need to be a sea creature to benefit from the healing - and helpful - properties of algae. More specifically, Harding says red algae is a strong antioxidant that naturally reduces free radicals and improves your heart health through increased circulation. For those days when your mind is foggy and youre feeling less than your best self, red algae has also been shown to boost your immune system when you need it. Not sure how to um, eat it? It comes in a variety of forms - dried, powdered or capsulated - and you might recognize a-top your sushi next time you order takeout. Consider having a container of red algae spice at your desk to sprinkle when you need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon.

Will a Robot Take My Job
Will a Robot Take My Job Will a Robot Take My Job In truth, there is a reasonable chance your job may be impacted over the course of your career. A study from the University of Oxford found that approximately 47 percent of all U.S. jobs are at risk of being automated away over the next 20 years. What Jobs Are Safe? The jobs least likely to be impacted by automation fall into three categories. Creative jobs such as artists, engineers, and business strategists are least likely to be automated, as they require new and unique thoughts each day. Jobs that require extensive human interaction รข" the human touch, as some call it รข" are also less likely to be impacted. These include social workers, nurses, and clergy members. Highly unpredictable jobs, such as emergency plumber, are likely to escape automation as well. Need for such jobs arises randomly, and the challenges these professionals face change form constantly. What Jobs Will Be Impacted? Any role with highly routine duties is at risk. For example, tax accountants could potentially be replaced by computers, and the same holds true for many logistics, transportation, and manufacturing jobs. Since 2014, Amazon has introduced more than 100,000 robots to its workforce Despite their very social nature, retail roles such as cashiers, counter clerks, and rental clerks, as well as telemarketers, are likely to be automated heavily, according to Oxfords research. The researchers note that although these occupations involve interactive tasks, they do not necessarily require a high degree of social intelligence, making them prime candidates for computerization. Mitigating the Impact There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and minimize the negative impact automation has on your career: Dont assume youll work for one company forever. Working for more than one company diversifies your risk and improves your professional network. Develop more than one salable skill. That way, youll have other options if your role is outsourced to robots. Never stop learning. Change is constant. To stay employed, you must stay on top of the trends in and around your industry. The thought of robots replacing you may be scary, but thorough preparation will ensure youre ready to grow along with the ever-evolving workplace. Majority of Americans no longer eat three meals a day
Majority of Americans no longer eat three meals a day Majority of Americans no longer eat three meals a day More of us are ditching the three-meals-a-day structured plan for the wilds of snack grazing. A new survey, conducted by OnePoll in partnership with Farm Rich, finds that only 27% of Americans are still eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a day.Out of the 2,000 Americans surveyed, 86 percent said that they had replaced a traditional meal with a รขsnack meal.รข The most common meal to get dropped in favor of a snack? Lunch. Almost half - 49%- of Americans said this was the mealtime they chose to replace with snacking. Why we love snackingBeing busy, having an untraditional schedule, wanting more variety of food, and impatience with prepping meals were among the top factors for why Americans were ditching three full meals for more snacks. The majority of Americans were snacking at home, while 31% were snacking at their jobs.Snacks can be more portable than a full-on meal, which may explain their rising popularity among busy workers. You can eat them with one hand. You can neatly p ack them away without worrying about lettuce and tomatoes flying everywhere. Participants said they were eating, on average, four snacks on the go each week. You are what you snack. Snacks can be a healthy addition to our meals or they can be what ruins our diets. The snacks available at your office are likely to determine your overall diet, one study found. If your office offers sugary candies at all hours, your diet may pay the price. In this way, it is important to recognize that snacking is not always in our control. The impulse to snack may be part of our office culture. We are more tempted to snack when we see other people snacking around us. One study found that participants ate snacks around other snackers even when they had set healthy intentions. If you see a coworker munch on a bag of chips, you are more likely to get up and get a bag of chips of your own. So when you want to munch on snacks in between a jam-packed work day, take a moment to realize if you are snacking beca use you want to and are genuinely hungry, or if you are doing it because you are bored.

Why a Resume Shouldnt Have an Objective
Why a Resume Shouldn't Have an Objective Why a Resume Shouldn't Have an Objective If you learned how to create a resume ten years ago or longer, you might be surprised to know that an objective is no longer an essential part of a standard resume. In fact, some career experts will tell you that having a resume objective is unnecessary at best and dated at worst. Like the line references upon request, its a space-filler thats keeping hiring managers from getting to the meat of your resume. You have a limited amount of time in which to grab their attention: eight seconds, to be exact, according to one study. Obviously, you dont want to waste any of that time telling them what they already know from the subject line of your email or the requisition number in the applicant tracking system. Here are the better alternatives to a resume objective: Branding Statements and Profiles A branding statement or professional profile has taken the place of the objective for most resume writers. In this brief introductory paragraph, job seekers provide an elevator speech รข" a quick summary of their experience, skills, and attributes that describes their career and qualifications at a glance. This introduction fulfills two main purposes at the same time: it gives hiring managers quick insight into the candidate while allowing the candidate an opportunity to use resume keywords that will get their application noticed. Use Keywords in Your Resume Choosing the right keywords is essential to getting past software and human screeners. These keywords arent the same as resume buzzwords รข" those are almost always overused and will get your resume a one-way trip to the circular file. No, resume keywords are individual to the job youre applying for and should change every time you submit your resume for a new position. How to Select Keywords To figure out the best keywords to use, scan the job listing and make a list of the most important words, e.g. job titles like regional manager or data scientist and skills words like proficient in Javascript or proven seller. Use the words that apply to your experience, skills, and job history, and craft a professional profile or branding statement. Keep Your Resume Honest Note: while its OK to emphasize your most relevant experience, dont lie รข" especially when it comes to job titles held or skills acquired. It does you no good to get hired for a position if you cant deliver on the promise your resume has made to the hiring manager. Sample Branding Statements and Profiles An award-winning graphic designer whose portfolio includes Fortune 100 clients like CVS, Verizon, and Kroger. Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Adept at estimating costs, gaining consensus across teams, and delivering projects on time and on budget. Review tips for writing a branding statement, with more examples, along with advice on adding a profile to your resume. If You Absolutely Must Have an Objective on Your Resume Cant let go of the idea of including an objective on your resume just yet? Its not just you - many people still want to stick to the traditional format with an objective at the top of the page. If you must have an objective, make sure its the right one. Resume objectives must: Change, depending on the job for which youre applying. Its no good using the same objective for multiple job openings. Resist the temptation to tweak a word or two, and craft your resume objective from scratch for each position under consideration.Contain keywords specific to the position, job description, and most valuable skills.Provide more than just the job title and description. Dont waste a moment of the hiring managers time by repeating information they already know, such as which job youre applying for or what the basic duties are. Show why youre a well-qualified candidate for the position.Explain what you have to offer the employer, not what you yourself are seeking in your next job or company. Bottom line: every part of your resume should count, including the objective, if you feel the need to include one. Remember, you only have eight seconds in which to make a first impression on the hiring manager or recruiter. You cant afford to waste time, especially right at the beginning of your resume. Grab their attention with a well-crafted, succinct branding statement and dont let go.

Is it Time to Re-think America#8217;s Position on Work-life Balance
Is it Time to Re-think America#8217;s Position on Work-life Balance Is it Time to Re-think America#8217;s Position on Work-life Balance My mother said no, of course. But as an adult and now full-time worker, I still support this notion of รขshorter weeks.รข And, pertaining to the workweek, not so much because I just want three full days off (I mean who doesnรขt?), but for a couple important reasons: 1) How we work is changing. With the addition of technology, especially mobile mediums, itรขs much easier to accomplish tasks from anywhere and at anytime. If weรขre honest, great deals of us go into an office and sit behind a computer for 8+ hours each day. As long as we can access the companyรขs systems outside the office, who needs to physically come into the office each and every single day? Canรขt we behind a computer in any location? 2) The definition of work is evolving. Nowadays itรขs not uncommon to see a man dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, sitting in a coffee shop on his laptop- doing work. Heรขs a real employee or a business owner although his appearance and working conditions are not typical รขbusiness professional.รข A worker is not confined to a cubicle or a building, and being employed doesnรขt always mean a structured 9-5 schedule or having one specific title. To work means many different things. So I, quite naturally, found the article interesting about Mexican telecom billionaire Carlos Slim, the worldรขs second richest man, saying at a business conference in Paraguay รขthat itรขs time for a รขradical overhaulรข in the way people work.รข (Yahoo! quoted him from the The Financial Times. According to the article, รขSlim said people should work three-days a week, to give employees more time to relax and have a better quality of life.รข Yet, the catch is shorter workweeks would mean longer work days, i.e. 10-11 hour days, which could delay retirement (to 70-or-75). Now the Yahoo! writer did note that although our nationรขs working week timetables need an overhaul, interestingly, this push usually comes from billionaires who donรขt actually have to work (haha!). But is the writer correct in that America does need to update its workweek mandate, especially for the sake (and health) of its workers? After all, Americans typically struggle to find work-life balance and have often been deemed workaholics. The five-day, 40-hour work week, according to the Yahoo! article, became the standard in the U.S. in 1938. That was 76 years ago, and as previously stated, the concept of work looks much different now from the 1930s. CNN Money created an article detailing the 10 industrialized nations where workers have shorter hours than Americanรขs average of 38 hours per week. Countries with the shortest workweeks (average hours worked per week): Netherlands: 29 Denmark: 33 Norway: 33 Ireland: 34 Germany: 35 Switzerland: 35 Belgium: 35 Sweden: 36 Australia: 36 Italy: 36 And look at some of the things the article had to say about each of the countries listed in comparison to our nation: About Switzerlandรขs work-life balance: รข¦Swiss workers earn nearly the same as the average American worker, but work 155 hours less each year. About a third of them are on part-time schedules. A whopping 79% of the countrys working-age population are employed, the highest of any industrialized nation. In comparison, only about 67% of Americans ages 15 to 65 have a job. About Belgiumรขs work-life balance: รข¦the government created career breaks. Every Belgian worker is entitled to a one-year break during their working lifetime. During this time off, the worker receives an allowance from the government. Belgian law also entitles workers to 15 weeks maternity leave, 10 days paternity leave, and in addition to that, up to three months parental leave, which can be taken in short increments up to a childs 12th birthday. Belgians work an average of 35 hours a week, and over an entire year, average about 210 fewer hours than American workers. And results from the 2013 OCED Better Life Index also support the evidence above that the U.S. is lagging behind other developed nations when it comes to its policies affecting work-life balance. An article on sfgate.com highlights a few examples: Compared with 36 other nations, the United States is the only country that does not have a national paid leave policy for mothers and fathers after a baby is born. The U.S. ranked 28 out of 36 on the index list of countries with the best work-life balance. Denmark was No. 1, and Canada, New Zealand, Brazil and most European countries all outrank the U.S. The U.S. ranked 14 out of 36, on the index list of countries whose people have the highest general satisfaction with life. We all know just how important work-life balance is, and with data showing that nations with shorter workweeks and a focus on quality of life ranking higher in the รขsatisfactionรข areas, can we assume that America has it all wrong? And this isnรขt necessarily focused on shortening working weeks, but our countryรขs views on work-life balance and quality of life overall. We work long hours; skip vacation days or if we do take them we work while on vacation; and many times put our career demands over our personal lives. And I believe this is largely due to whatรขs been instilled in us from day one: You have to work hard to succeed, but somehow weรขve turned working hard into constantly working. Our nation is so fast-paced; everyone has to be doing something- grinding, building a brand, networking, etc.- and the more demands you have on your plate the better. And for this hustle and busyness we sacrifice family, relationships, and sometimes, even our health. With the way the workforce is shifting, i.e. telecommuting, startups, etc.- is now truly the time for American workers and employers to adjust their thinking and practices when it comes to work-life balance in the U.S.?

Office buildings sway, and scientists want to know how it affects us
Office buildings sway, and scientists want to know how it affects us Office buildings sway, and scientists want to know how it affects us Ladders is fortunate enough to work at the top of a high-rise building with sprawling views of a harbor on one side and skyscrapers on another - which, on a sunny day, can make you feel like thereรขs nothing you canรขt achieve. But on a stormy afternoon in our office last week, we heard a persistent creaking, a kind of low roar. We traced to the sound to a small corner conference room, where we could literally hear the walls moving. The building was actually swaying. Itรขs not a horror movie. Itรขs just science.Your building is vibratingResearchers at the University of Bath and the University of Exeter recently announced a five-year, government funded project designed to study รขthe impact of vibrations from very tall buildings and wobbly bridges and floors on peopleรขs health and wellbeingรข at a รขgovernment-funded national research facility.รขThe center will use รขsimulatorsรข to replicate various situations- like working in an office skyscraper. In a University of Exe ter statement on the study, Dr Antony Darby, Head of Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, commented on how well people tolerate movement in different situations: รขJust like sea sickness, our propensity to motion induced discomfort is situation and environment dependent. For example, people at a concert in a grandstand will accept completely different level of vibration than those in a hospital operating theatre.รขHow much vibration you can stand could depend on the circumstances youรขre in.According to the statement, รขdespite looking rigid in appearance, tall buildings can flex in response to external forces, and strong winds can make them vibrate or sway at low frequencies, sometimes with bursts of motion at random intervals,รข adding that studies have shown that some people can detect the movement, which can at times result in รขmotion sickness and causing fear.รขSick building syndromeIf you donรขt feel well in the office, donรขt just brush it off- you could be dealing with stale air, or maybe even sick building syndrome, which has been connected to vibrations and noises in buildings. Studies have shown that office spaces and the air we breathe there affect our performance.A 2008 article in the Indian Journal of Occupational Environmental Medicine, published on the website for the US National Library of Medicine - part of the National Institutes of Health- detailed the condition.รขThe sick building syndrome comprises of various nonspecific symptoms that occur in the occupants of a building. This feeling of ill health increases sickness absenteeism and causes a decrease in productivity of the workersรข¦รข the article said. The article listed certain symptoms, including: รขdizziness,รข รขeye, nose or throat irritation,รข รขheadache,รข รขdry or itching skin,รข รขfatigueรข and รขdifficulty in concentration,รข attributing them to a specific text.A 2008 article by the Air Waste Management Association called รขLinking Noise and Vibration to Sick Building Syndrome in Office Buildingsรข said that รขin recent years, several studies have linked excessive noise and vibration in the office to illnesses, such as headaches, dizziness, irritability, and stress. This is similar to the more well-known indoor air quality triggers associated with sick building syndromeรข¦รขIf your buildingรขs vibrations or noise is throwing you off, be sure to step out for fresh air and let someone else know about your symptoms.

9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace Negativity
9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace Negativity 9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace Negativity Nothing affects employee morale more insidiously than persistent workplace negativity. It saps the energy of your organization and diverts critical attention from work and performance. Negativity can occur in the attitude, outlook, and talk of one department member, or in a crescendo of voices responding to a workplace decision or event. As a manager or human resources professional, you are closely in touch with employees throughout the company. You receive employee complaints, do exit interviews with employees who leave, and know the reputation of your organization in your community. You can monitor the discussions on employee intranets, manage the appraisal and 360-degree feedback process, and coach managers in the appropriate staff treatment. This information helps you learn to identify the symptoms of negativity before its morale-busting consequences damage your workplace. It will also assist you in preventing and curtailing workplace negativity. Diagnose Workplace Negativity Negativity is an increasing problem in the workplace, according to Gary S. Topchik, the author of Managing Workplace Negativity. He states, in Management Review, that negativity is often the result of a loss of confidence, control, or community. Knowing what people are negative about is the first step in solving the problem. When rumblings and negativity are surfacing in your organization, talking with employees will help you understand the exact problems and the degree to which the problems are impacting your workplace. You will want to identify the exact employee groups who are experiencing the negativity and the nature of the issues that sparked their unhappiness. Perhaps the organization made a decision that adversely affected staff. Perhaps the executive manager held a staff meeting and was perceived to threaten or ignore people asking legitimate questions. Whatever the cause of the workplace negativity, you must address the issues. Or, like a seemingly dormant volcano, they will boil beneath the surface, and periodically bubble up and overflow to cause fresh damage. 1:37 Watch Now: 8 Ways to Create a Happier Workplace 9 Tips to Minimize Workplace Negativity Remember that the best way to combat workplace negativity is to keep it from occurring in the first place. 1. Control Over Their Job Provide opportunities for people to make decisions about and control and influence their job. The single most frequent cause of workplace negativity is traceable to a manager or the organization making a decision about a personรขs work without their input. Almost any decision that excludes the input of the person doing the work is perceived as negative. 2. Opportunity to Express Opinions Make opportunities available for people to express their opinion about workplace policies and procedures. Recognize the impact of changes in such areas as work hours, pay, benefits, assignment of overtime hours, comp pay, dress codes, office location, job requirements, and working conditions. These factors are closest to the mind, heart and physical presence of each individual. Changes to these can cause serious negative responses. Provide timely, proactive responses to questions and concerns. 3. Use Consistent Fair Treatment Treat people as adults with fairness and consistency. Develop and publicize workplace policies and procedures that organize work effectively. Apply them consistently. 4. Provide Trust and Respect Treat your employees as if they are trustworthy and worthy of your respect- because they are. Start from a position of trust when you hire a new employee. Verify their performance, truthfulness, and contribution over time to confirm your original position. Do not start from a position of believing that people must earn your trust. That positioning ensures that negativity will take over in your workplace. Employees have radar machines and they are constantly scoping out their work environment. If you dont trust them they will know you dont. 5. Target Punishment and Rules Do not create rules for all employees when just a few people are violating the norms. You want to minimize the number of rules directing the behavior of adult people at work. Treat people as adults and they will usually live up to your expectations, and their own expectations. 6. Be Inclusive Help people feel included- each person wants to have the same information as quickly as everyone else. Provide the context for decisions, and communicate effectively and constantly. You cannot over-communicate if your desire is to reduce negativity and gain the confidence and support from your employees. 7. Provide Opportunity for Growth Afford people the opportunity to grow and develop. Training, perceived opportunities for promotions, lateral moves for development, and cross-training are visible signs of an organizationรขs commitment to staff. Make your commitment to employee growth and development by creating mutually developed career path plans for every employee. 8. Be a Leader Provide appropriate leadership and a strategic framework, including mission, vision, values, and goals. People want to feel as if they are part of something bigger than themselves. If they understand the direction, and their part in making the desired outcomes happen, they can contribute more. People make better decisions for your business when you empower them with the information they need to make decisions that strategically align with your overall direction. 9. Give Recognition Provide appropriate rewards and recognition so people feel their contribution is valued. The power of appropriate rewards and recognition for a positive workplace is remarkable. Suffice to say, reward and recognition are two of the most powerful tools an organization can use to buoy staff morale.

Dont Quit Your Job Until Youve Accepted a New One
Dont Quit Your Job Until Youรขve Accepted a New One Dont Quit Your Job Until Youรขve Accepted a New One Have you ever been tempted to quit your job even though you donรขt have another one lined up yet? Maybe youรขre sure youรขre about to get an offer, or maybe you just canรขt stand working for your current boss. It can be tempting to give your notice on the spot, but it can also be an enormous mistake if you donรขt have another job formally locked in yet. Hereรขs why you should never resign from your job until you have an official job offer รข" one that youรขve finished negotiating and have accepted. 1. It might take you a lot longer than you think to find a new job. If you expect to find another job within a couple of months, think again. Finding another job can take a long time รข" often much longer than job seekers expect. In fact, in this market, itรขs not uncommon for a job search to take a year or more. That means if you quit your job without first securing another, you might end up with a large gap on your resume, which can make it harder to get hired. It can also drain your savings and leave you in a precarious financial position รข" one where the pressure to find another job will quickly become greater than ever. 2. It's much easier to get another job when you're still employed. Rightly or wrongly, most employers prefer to hire people who are already employed. Many assume that people who quit their jobs without another lined up did so because they were either fired or about to be fired. Or they may think the candidate walked away when things got tough, which worries managers, because every job has challenges. That doesnรขt mean itรขs an instant deal-breaker, but itรขs highly likely to raise questions from employers and potentially make your job search harder. 3. The job offer youรขre counting on might fall through. Sometimes job seekers are so sure that an offer is forthcoming that they go ahead and give notice to their current employers. Sometimes this works out just fine, but other times it ends badly when the offer falls through. And if youรขve already given notice, your current employer may have already made plans to replace you, or they might not be willing to let you rescind your notice รข" which can leave you without the old or new job. Because of that risk, you should never resign until you have an official offer in hand from your new employer รข" not a promise that an offer is coming, not very good signs that seem like theyรขre leading somewhere รข" but an actual, formal offer. Better yet, wait until youรขve accepted that formal offer, because otherwise itรขs possible that your negotiations could fall apart. 4. You might not pass the background check. Sometimes an employer might tell you that a new job is a done deal, but youรขll notice fine print in the offer letter that says itรขs contingent on you passing a background check or reference check. Even if youรขre confident both of those will go fine, thatรขs never guaranteed. Sometimes mistakes are made in background checks, or a reference call doesnรขt go quite the way you assumed it would. Until any contingencies like these are cleared, your offer could still hit a snag, which means you might not want to risk resigning your job at this stage. Perhaps a new employer pressures you to give notice while the offer still has contingencies attached to it. In that case, explain that while you donรขt expect any problems with references or in the background check, youรขre not comfortable giving notice until the offer is finalized. You can say something like, รขAs soon as the offer is firm and without contingencies, Iรขll be able to give my employer two weeks notice. But I canรขt resign my job until the new one is certain.รข Are there any times when itรขs OK to resign without a new job? There are a few limited circumstances when it might make sense to quit your job before youรขve secured a new one: if youรขre being subjected to egregiously abusive or harassing treatment, if your safety is being compromised or if youรขre being pressured to do anything illegal, unethical or unsafe. But aside from those limited cases, youรขre far better off job searching while youรขre still employed.
